What is Phishing

Updated over 3 months ago

What is Phishing?

Phishing is a fraud method where criminals try to obtain confidential data through fake websites or emails. These fake sites often look almost identical to real websites, such as login pages of banks, online services, or even your own website. The goal is to trick you into entering your login details or other personal information, which are then stolen.

How do people become victims of phishing?

Phishing can happen in different ways:

  • Fake emails: You receive an email that looks like it comes from a trusted provider (e.g., your bank or an online service). It asks you to click on a link and enter your data. However, the link leads to a fake website.

  • Deceptively real phishing websites: These websites often look very similar to genuine ones but usually differ in the URL. You may be lured to them through a link in an email, an SMS, or even through search engines.

  • Fake web forms: Sometimes forms are placed on hacked websites that look as if they are part of the normal site. When you enter data, it goes directly to the attackers.

What can you do about it?

There are some important steps you can take to protect yourself and your website from phishing:

  • Check emails carefully: Only open links in emails if you are sure they come from a trusted source. Phishing emails often contain spelling mistakes, unusual requests, or pressure to act immediately.

  • Pay attention to the URL: Before entering your data on a website, check the address in the browser bar. Is it spelled correctly? Does it use “https” (with the small lock symbol)?

  • Use two-factor authentication (2FA): Enable 2FA for your hosting account whenever possible. This adds an extra layer of security when accessing your accounts.

  • Secure your website: Keep your software and plugins up to date at all times. Outdated versions may contain vulnerabilities that attackers can exploit.

  • Use security tools: Install security plugins that monitor your website for suspicious activities and protect you from potential phishing attacks.

  • Backups: Make regular backups of your website so you can quickly respond in an emergency and restore your data.

By following these tips, you can greatly improve the security of your website and data, and protect yourself effectively from phishing attacks.

How does Hoststar support you in the fight against phishing?

Hoststar actively protects you from phishing attacks by securing every .CH and .LI top-level domain with DNSSEC (Domain Name System Security Extensions). DNSSEC ensures that visitors to your website are not redirected to fraudulent or manipulated sites created by attackers. This makes it virtually impossible for cybercriminals to create a fake phishing site pretending to be your website and tricking your customers or visitors.

DNSSEC checks and authenticates every DNS query and ensures that your customers visit the real website. This means attackers cannot use fake DNS entries to redirect your visitors to a fraudulent page.

In addition, we actively monitor our servers for suspicious activity and provide comprehensive security tools to help you protect your website and your visitors. With these measures, Hoststar helps you maintain your customers’ trust and ensure the security of your website.
