Nameservers

Updated over 3 months ago

What Are Nameservers?

Nameservers are like an address book for the internet. When you visit a website like www.domain.com, your computer asks a nameserver to find the exact address (IP address) of that website. This is important because computers and servers communicate using IP addresses, but we humans find it easier to remember website names rather than long strings of numbers.

What Happens If I Change the Nameservers?

When you change the nameservers of your domain, you’re telling the internet to use a new “address book” to locate your domain. This can be useful if you switch hosting providers or want to make technical adjustments. However, it’s important to make sure the new “address book” (the new nameserver) contains the correct information so that your website and emails continue to function properly.

What Are the Effects of Changing Them?

When you change nameservers, it can take 24 to 48 hours for this change to take effect across the entire internet. This process is called “propagation.” During this time, some users may already see the new data while others still see the old information.

Why Is It Important Where the DNS Zone Is Located?

The DNS zone is the storage location of all the important data that determines where requests for your domain should be directed. It contains information about where your website is hosted and where emails should be sent. This DNS data is stored on the nameservers you’ve set for your domain.

How Can I Change the Nameservers?

  • Log in to My Panel
